Planting campaign on h_da's campus

At h_da, science and sustainability literally go hand in hand. One example is the planting campaigns on campus organised by Sustainability Management and the university’s Green Office. That’s when everyone with green fingers and strong arms is invited to roll up their sleeves, grab a spade – and get digging!
Alongside the enthusiastic students and staff taking part in the latest planting campaign on 29 April in front of the Faculty of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology was molecular biologist Professor Vera Göhre. Not only for the joy of gardening but also because she wants to track down fungi that attack plants such as corn, rice or rapeseed and put them out of action without using toxic pesticides (see impact article “Just how cunning can fungi be?!”).
This explains why corn is now sprouting in front of the faculty building. Perhaps all the gardeners will even be able to enjoy a round of popcorn at the end of the semester – which will be bad news for troublemakers such as Ustilago maydis, a harmful and cunning smut fungus.
